The devilishly handsome Robert Pattinson

Robert Pattison grew up in Barnes, a pretty west London suburb on the river Thames.  His mum Clare had a successful career in a modeling agency, and his dad Richard ran an importing business centered around autos from America.  One night Robert and his father were at the local hamburger joint Tootsie’s.  At the next table some attractive teenage girls were discussing the local drama club.  While eavesdropping on their conversation, the idea to sign up at the club formed in Robert’s mind – as he was later to say ‘It was a social thing. I literally went there 100 per cent to meet these girls sitting at the next table’.

To start with Robert was given the job of Stage Manager, co-ordinating the multitude of activities that go on backstage.  But he always had his eye on appearing on the stage, rather than working behind it.  Soon he’d successfully auditioned for the part of  roguish Alec in a stage adaptation of Hardy’s Tess of the D’Urbervilles.  He took to acting instantly, and soon had caught the attention of a London acting agent.  His professional acting debut was in 2004, in a TV film Ring of the Niberlungs, which was shot in South Africa.

Later that year came his biggest break so far.  He landed the role of Cedric Digory, a star pupil at Hogwarts in the 4th Harry Potter film  Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.  Robert put in a fine performance, fighting gruesome animated trees, fleeing through mazes, and duels underwater.  His good looks didn’t go unnoticed either – he’d soon picked up the labels ‘heart-throb’ and ‘hunk of howarts’.

Robert’s movie career continued its upward path.  Next came a small arty film How to Be, a qwirky and original tale of a young man who suffers a quarter-life crisis, after being dumped by a girlfriend and moving back into his parents’.

2007 was to see Robert’s biggest step towards movie mega-stardom.  He was picked for the part of  Edward Cullen the vampire-with-values in the movie version of the hugely-popular novel Twilight by Stephenie Meyer. The legions of fans of the book were, to start with, dismissive of the choice of Pattinson as their hero.  But when the movie was finally released late in 2008, Robert’s fine performance and drop-dead gorgeous looks converted the doubtful.
